Yikes, good point. People always assumed I’d be on their page because I’m so cis. So that was often awkward. On my daughter’s 6th birthday, despite an explicit ban stated on the invite, she received over a dozen Barbie’s, a dream house and a Barbie Ferrari.

It kills me that trying to parent with any kind of critical gender understanding remains impossible. The heartening news is that my 40 year old child, now a parent, fights with much more aplomb and success than I was able to achieve. The bad news is, it’s exhausting and outrageous to have to do it.
