We had heating pads beneath the hives and a tarp thrown over them to protect them from the sudden freezing temperatures, ice and snow. But it wasn’t enough.
We open the hives yesterday to clean them out. These are the combs we removed. A few of the bees are still in place.

The second hive, and this is truly heartbreaking, was caught unawares during a recent flash freeze. The weather had been warming and they had become more active when the sudden temperature drop hit them.
