Chapter 1: Horizon Horizon hooked her knees around the trunk and reached for the blossom that glowed between two branches. The xanthia was worth more than gold back at Wolf Haven — healing tonic, trade stock, survival itself — but only if you cut it just right. The hundred-foot drop below whispered a dare. She forced her gaze on the petals: pink edged in blue, shimmering with veins of liquid gold. Knife steady, she pried away the thick green growth. One flick, and the blossom came free. She slid it into her tray, capped the extraction tube as glittering sap swirled into it, and tucked the vial against her chest to keep it warm. Conservation mattered as much as harvest. Duff, her dad, had drilled that into her — always give back. So she brushed pollen from a purple flower across the next blossoms, then red, then orange. The canopy breathed with her, leaf-whisper and insect buzz settling into rhythm. For a moment it felt like she belonged here. Then the rhythm stopped. No leaf-breath. No skitter. No wings. Only the faint hiss of silence. And beneath it, the pulse of distant drums. Her fingers tightened on the bark. Chanting? Out here? The jungle never stilled unless something was watching. The sound bled away. An arrow frog cheeped, tentative, as if the jungle itself was pretending nothing had happened.

Today was going to be a good day. I could feel it in the sunshine spilling across my room—until the universe gave me a twinge of doubt. It ignored the warning and stretched to touch Bunzilla, the closest in the line of bunnies that guarded my sleep. "Hello Bunzilla, did you want to go to the shop with me today?" The little bunny stuffie in the godzilla costume stood closest to the bathroom door. His buddies lined up behind him, except for little bunny 'thuluh who had tackled sherlock cumberbunn. Bunzilla and little bunny 'thuluh were on opposite ends as they didn't get along. They'd had too many epic battles in the world to even be friends as stuffies. "I think you might need a break from the others." I picked him up and gave him a quick hug. He would get to sit with me at my shop, Moonstone & Mischief. No one saw my tagline, but I said it in my head every time I thought of my shop. — Intuition, tea, and just a pinch of trouble. But not today. Today was going to be a good day. Bunzilla fell over. Well snap, that was not a good sign. It wasn't a bad, sign, just not a good sign. Maybe he just needed his gear. I grabbed his the backpack with his stuffie inside. The backpack fit behind his back, only squishing his costume spines a little bit. He didn't mind. There. That would help whatever might go wrong today. I set him on the counter and moved to rearrange the rest of my bunnies so they could interact with different bunnies. A good socialized bunny means less trouble later. The one time I had left Hulk bunny and Scarlet Witch bunny too close together, the Hulk had been on the floor surrounded by a broken tea cup.

Chapter 2: Philarioneth Kael I drew in a long breath of the moist air, willing the scent of Kalecca’s jungle to etch itself deep into memory. Philarioneth Kael, the ship will leave soon. We wish you well. Yes. I am almost ready for separation. Already I had begun the quieting ritual, dimming the voices of my clan one by one. I had learned the hard way what happened if I did not: the first time I left, the silence of space had been too sudden, too complete. I had curled into a corner of the ship, near-mad with the absence, unable to function for days. Now I muted them in layers. The distant kin first. Then the middling bonds. And at last, the ones closest to me. Quantiralis Vey, my clutch-brother and oldest companion, was always the final voice I dimmed. He would also be the first I unmuted once I reached the cold emptiness above. We wish you did not need to go. His thought brushed warm against mine, reluctant. As do I. But you know why it must be me. Only seven of the Kaeltharim had minds strong enough to endure separation without unraveling. I was one of them. I could carry the shape of myself apart from the chorus of the clan. Without that, the mathematicians would never have sanctioned my journeys. We sense only a dim mote where Philarioneth Kael should be. His projection trembled with ache, and the grief in it hollowed me. I will return. Soon. We will miss you.
