The year is 2045. Projet Montréal has been elected to a 7th consecutive term. Your landlord's property management algorithm just increased your rent by 21%. On your way to the cashless dépanneur, you lift your shirt over your nose to block the stench of Cellule 19, the new Stablex toxic waste dump two streets over that they evicted 6 homeless encampments to build. In the last minute you've passed 8 Teslas, 17 Ring doorbells, 9 Google Nests, 3 PTZ cameras on businesses, 3 city cameras, 12 cameras on homes, a GardaBot, and 3 real estate agents wearing smart glasses. Suddenly, the predictive policing drone whizzes towards you, stopping above your head. "Attention! Ceci est un avertissement du Service de police de la Ville de Montréal", it bellows. "Le port du couvre-visage n'est pas autorisé dans cette zone. Nous vous ordonnons de l'enlever immédiatement." You feel a flicker of nostalgia (there hasn't been a street protest in over six years) before you comply; you can't risk the fine being automatically deducted from your pay at the AI training facility. It didn't have to be this way, but you were afraid to ask your comrade-crush to form a team with you and join CAMOVER 2025.

In the last two years, we have seen protests on campus but have never been forced to enact such preventive measures. That changed yesterday after two individuals were arrested following the disruption of a class and midterm exam. One of those arrested was later discovered to be in possession of a metal bar and several incendiary devices. Neither of these individuals are members of the Concordia community. With hundreds of protesters from other universities and cegeps expected — as well as counter protesters not linked to the university planning to gather outside our downtown campus this afternoon — the threat of extreme disruption is simply too high to operate as usual. It is with profound sadness that this decision was made. Acts of intimidation and violence have no place in our society, and particularly not in institutions that centre around teaching and learning. I am sure the vast majority of you are fed up with the behaviour and disrespect some exhibit...
