UGA Ornithology students listening for black rails at St. marks NWR today. Slightly different weather 😅 No black rails so far but they also got great looks at several bald eagles

It was just so genuine and memorable. A perfect example of being yourself when giving a scientific talk, rather than trying to be conventional because you think that's what people want to hear. She was a role model for me and so many others. What a huge loss for our community

Emma talked about her transition from research-based PhD to leading FeederWatch - her journey rather than the science itself. It was personal, funny, insightful. Like a 3-min episode of This American Life. I don't remember a single other talk from that conference but her talk has always stuck w me

So sad. She was such a bright light. I regularly tell people about an early career lightening talk she gave at an AOS meeting years ago. Everyone else (including me) tried to cram their entire research program into 3 slides, with predictably poor results

Thanks, very helpful. So let’s say a bird has symmetrical flight feather molt. Would body molt of 2 vs 3 vs 4 translate to x% vs y% vs z% of molt completed, assuming those % could be ranges or even bimodal (eg score = 2 is ~0-20% OR ~80-100% through molt)?

I’m still figuring this place out but the familiarity of seeing your questionable music takes is comforting
