Some of life's struggles are timeless.
Indeed, in Medieval times, German songwriter Neidhardt depicted the discomfort of a cold winter, and a knight's lack of "sweet reward" from his beloved that he believes he deserves for his service to her.

There are plenty of Bach arrangements for clarinet, and while they have their usefulness, if you're going to thoroughly study the famous Cello Suites and adapt them to clarinet, it's best to get as close to the source as possible!

One my stand this week is a solid staple of the unaccompanied clarinet repertoire—John Mayer's "Raga Music":

No, it’s not THAT kind of croissant. The full expressive direction translates to “At first tender, then with growing irritation.”

Now here is a menu I'd like to feast on: "Entrée Funky," "Entrée Nocturne"...oh, hold up, it's not that kind of entrée. This is “entrée de ballet,” a choreographic form of 18th-century opera-ballet, and it informed a new clarinet concerto by Guillaume Connesson:

This is a ghostly whisper of a piece—"Ruins of Ani" by Alan Hovhaness:
www.clarinetallmusic...

The 4-minute work is bookended with a pair of brief aleatoric moments, each taking the form of a violent swell. Between these chaotic bookends sits a smooth, regal melody—a lament for the ruined city.
