First team costume: Gandalf and the hobbits (minus a hobbit who left campus)

Just Gandalf taking the Mines of Moria (the light rain train tunnels) to do his grey wizard business on campus today

Adding to my extreme dislike of AI: Google AI suggests testing just how explosive a combustible substance is before trying to weigh it in the lab

The Venney lab gathered for a fall photo today, and to share a spiced honey cake (made with Rueppell lab honey) to celebrate Tia's first manuscript submission!

We've started the tradition of "paper pastries" (manuscript morsels?) where we all share a treat for manuscript submission 🍰

First time at Mill Street in YYZ since I flew back from my U of A interview. Today I’m proud to be flying back to Québec to give a presentation at Université Laval’s Journée Étudiante de l’IBIS (my postdoc department). What a whirlwind 19 months!

I took a week and a half off to tackle some minor repairs and painting of our new (first!) house.

Today is my first day back to work and the living room walls are looking particularly inspiring compared to my overflowing inbox

Sometimes a slow morning and a bit of exercise does wonders. I went on a much-needed 6 km run this morning to touch grass and admire the flowers. ☀️ 🌺 now to get to work and finish that grant proposal!

Bill 26, a UCP effort to deny lifesaving gender affirming care to young Albertans, has been blocked by the courts! One piece of good news amidst all the bad in the world these days. 🌈

I had an amazing time at EPIMAR2025 talking about aquatic epigenomics for 4 days - so much fun that I forgot to take pictures!

Thanks to the organizers for a great conference, and for the honour of giving a plenary talk. Can’t wait for Chilé 2027!

Happy to live in a city with great cycling infrastructure, including protected bike lanes 🙌 I only drive once or twice a month and do not miss the commute

A few photos from spring runs in Edmonton 🌺 🌱

Proud of the trout team for spawning our first fish for an epigenetic inheritance experiment today!

Fingers crossed we have surviving eyed eggs in a few weeks 🤞

Another great trip to the Allison Creek Hatchery in Crowsnest Pass in the books, this time with @britneyfirth.bsky.social !

I didn’t realize how beautiful the area was last time with the snowstorm and cloudiness

Should I be getting ready for my flight in 2 hours? Yes.

Am I on the couch giving the cat a belly rub? Also yes.

The small but mighty Venney lab collected the first samples for our planned epigenetic inheritance experiment today.

60 westslope cutthroat trout blood sampled, fin clipped, and recovered. Go team! 👏

The Venney lab is unpacked, cleaned, organized, and ready for a few years of omics research until our renovated space is ready 🤓

We're hiring an MSc/PhD student to design in-field eDNA biodiversity monitoring protocols in Alberta's prairie pothole region!

Collaborative project with InnoTech Alberta, the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, and Ducks Unlimited Canada!

Are you interested in evolutionary epigenetics?

After Evolution 2024 in Montréal, we created an Evolutionary Epigenetics Discord server for all things epigenetics - data analysis, events, job opportunities, etc.

Interested? Message me for the link! 😄

Yup, I could get used to this 🙌

Had a great visit at the Allison Creek Brood Trout Hatchery today! Nothing like fieldwork to reinvigorate the mind

Winter is officially here ❄️ glad there are two cafes in the building to keep me warm and caffeinated!

First winter run around Edmonton ❄️

Okay I also got caught in freezing rain during a run two weekends ago, but that one was unintentional and less scenic 😅

Hello, world! I’m a #NewPI at UAlberta. Our research focuses on mechanisms for plasticity like DNA methylation. I’m particularly interested in the role of epigenomic variation in evolution on different timescales, from acute acclimation to genome evolution. Fish, salmonids, maybe snails? Stay tuned!
