Crisis: Continuity and Change in the Ancient World Universities in Wales Institute of Classics and Ancient History (UWICAH) Cardiff University, 6-7th March 2025 Crisis is a pervasive problem in the ancient world. It concerns major shifts in ideology, government, economy, social order and technology. This conference aims to contribute to our understanding of how societies responded to moments of transformation and disruption through continuity or change. This is a valuable theme to research in ancient history as it enables the exploration of how people, states and empires responded to moments of upheaval and disaster. This includes, but is not limited to, the consequences of environmental events, war, political violence, religious change, the displacement of people as well as innovation and changes to literature and language. The conference aims to bring together postgraduate students and researchers from across Welsh institutions. We also welcome papers from non-Welsh institutions who have a special interest in the ancient history of Wales, or otherwise believe their paper would fit strongly with the themes of the conference. The committee would like papers to be presented in-person at Cardiff University. Whilst some exceptions may be made for online papers, we wish to give priority to in-person speakers to allow for networking opportunities. The committee welcomes papers from, but not limited to, the following list of themes: - Demography Disease Trade and Exchange Religion Identity Archaeology and Material Culture - Linguistics and Classical Literature - Political Systems - Imperialism - Violence and Upheaval Abstracts should be sent to uwicah2025@gmail.com by the 10th January 2025.
