Feminist. Building Surveyor with civil engineering degree, so know that cycling requires highway engineering, & land & transport planning
Until Highway Authorities in general, & TfL in particular, put efficient uses of roadspace, buses, walking, & cycling above inefficient use of roadspace driving, we won't get actual bus priority, short waits & time for everyone to cross & protected cycle lanes.

The highway authority, probably Greenwich, but TfL has the final say, models the scheme, using general traffic measurements on a Tuesday rush hour in February. If the model shows road protected cycle lanes, cause congestion, you get this nonsense. The model assumes everyone driving has to drive.

As a lifetime cycling advocate I also always major on how driving is such an inefficient use of roadspace, bus priority, walking and cycling in that order, to maximise the number of people who can travel to work, education, hang out with friends and family. See also cheap fares

No idea why I know this, possibly via, Campaigning for inclusive cycling, Wheels for Wellbeing share.google/kdLfdOhuYRpu... but more people can cycle than can walk.

Also, collect what is already due. Talking to colleagues, few knew that bank interest is paid gross, and they owe tax, so go back to paying bank interest net.
Require companies to inform HMRC when shares sold, so HMRC can check capital gains tax paid

Sadly not. I think it was after a year of lower fares. Official from the federal government? Had travelled in Germany on packed trains & buses talking to moaning regulars, but had seen that, of course, everyone was still driving, so was interested, even though conclusions, for me, were unsurprising.

Agrees with German research following reducing public transport fares, driving did not go down, same amount of space to park & drive duh, BUT people felt happier, as they could afford to go out more

My understanding is that it is feeling safe that is key. Anecdatally I would agree with that

I have cycled around locations where she had designed gardens in South and East London. Often, where a church had long gone, the only green space in a 1950s housing estate

In an interview in 1890 she commented that ‘I certainly do not let myself be underpaid as many women do. … I know my profession and charge accordingly, as all women should do.

The Bus God that is Ken Livingstone, compromised on allowing deliveries, and general parking, in bus priority. DONT, waste of time and money. TfL are gradually, retrospectively, making bus priority 24/7 removing general parking & delivery space. Use reallocated space on side streets, for deliveries.

When you get a modelling report, ignore it, it only models general traffic, most of which, from research, 80%, is driving an unnecessary journey could be walked, cycled or done on public transport or done at another time. If you are not already, get very confident on Motor Traffic Evaporation.

Priority also used by people, like me, 67, cycling.

What Bus Priority does need is huge, political confidence & will, as you are reallocating roadspace away from most inefficient use of roadspace general traffic, to most efficient use of roadspace buses.
May 30, 2025 at 7:04 AM
Bus Priority does not need bus lanes, can be done with signals. Hold general traffic at wider section of road to let bus through first into narrower section. Very successful down here in South London.

Will follow at first to see if they have stopped posting the nonsense that if you start cycling it will reduce congestion. Had a late night toing & froing with one of their staff. I think it got through.

Er no, modal shift from motor vehicle to cargo cycle, leaves space on high demand links & junctions of the TLRN for someone driving to make a new journey, & the congestion returns. Only a congestion charge reduces congestion
November 23, 2024 at 5:25 PM
I advocate for destinations a safe, direct walking or cycling distance from home, via LTNs or main road segregated space. Regular, cheap public transport for journeys distances too far to cycle, road pricing for all non essential journeys, so roads are only for people who actually have to drive.

My experience, as a long time advocate in a number of areas, is that anyone can influence policy.

My experience is that the many disabled people who cycle are better able to respond than me.

Talking, to pols & activists across the UK, the TfL democratic deficit is a blessing & a curse. On LTN boundary road an increase in bus journey times TfL removed parking with just a nod to "consultation" but we have no ability to lobby an elected HA pol where TfL continue with driving priority.
