My comment in @theguardian.com on why the new law requiring porn and social media platforms to remove choking/strangulation content is very welcome.

Done an 'official' post - but actually now sharing this 😀
Can't emphasise how exciting it is for your ordinary academic to have their book featured like this - might even be that it's not just libraries that buy it😀

Intimate images are being shared on mainstream media, against the law in Serbia, to shame and silence women - and no action is being taken.
Every day there are new stories about the extent of image abuse against women and girls #darktimes

My latest comment on - why we need to talk about 'sexual digital forgeries' not "deepfake p0rn."
Terminology matters - it shapes our debates, laws and policies. Forgery underlines this is stealing someone's identity.

Excellent article from Anna Moore emphasising the serious risks of choking/strangulation during sex, with my comments on the proposed regulation of depictions in prnography:

The End of #MrDeepfakes? Seems that for now, this notorious website - responsible for the exponential rise in deepfake sexual abuse - has shut itself down. About time. It's responsible for the abuse of thousands.

Meta is promoting 'submissive schoolgirl' AI chatbots. Normalising and legitimising child sexual abuse. Deliberately. For Profit.
That's the AI revolution for you. At the same time as the highest reports of sexual assault are from 14 year old girls.

New: From Virtual Rape to Meta-Rape: Sexual Violence, Criminal law & the Metaverse. Pleased it's finally out as it's been a few years in the making-always postponed by 'urgent' crises. But that’s the problem: we’re not doing enough to anticipate emerging abuses

Disingenuous is the mild response to this story. The Online Safety Act will have no bearing on the Tate-type misogyny online as it’s mostly lawful. There is no ‘crack down’.

Trumps in news for different reason today - Melania speaks out against deepfake sexual abuse, supporting the cross-party Take It Down Act.
What are the lessons from the US Take It Down Act for the UK? We too need binding obligations on platforms to remove non-consensual content.

My challenge to @Google to take far more proactive steps to reduce deepfake sexual abuse. Relying on reports by victims is wrong approach. Me👇🏽at #AIActionSummit in Paris at even organised by French Gov’t Laboratory for Women’s Rights Online #FreedomOnline

Discussion today at #AIActionSummit mostly ignored gender. Glimmer of hope from Global Partnership for Action new call for gender to be integral to development and regulation of AI.

Creating deepfakes violates a person’s right to privacy and sexual autonomy, striking at the heart of their sexual life. The European Court of Human Rights has repeatedly highlighted the importance of safeguarding these intimate rights and emphasised the harm of intrusions through imagery.
January 26, 2025 at 3:54 PM
My briefing to Parliamentarians last week argued that regulation enhances human rights and protects women’s freedom of expression.
Criminalising creation of sexually explicit deepfakes is a legitimate restriction on Article 10 to protect victims' Article 8 rights. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

🚨 New: UK Government has changed its approach to deepfake sexual abuse laws – moving to a consent-based model - following months of challenge. Worrying tho that they initially opposed this citing 'free speech'. My response ⬇️
January 26, 2025 at 3:54 PM
Should it be unlawful to ask someone to make a sexually explicit deepfake for you?
Yes. However, contrary to Ministry of Justice, we believe that a specific law is needed to ensure all cases are covered.
