...a stark contrast to the 'local communities with legitimate concerns' narrative that is amplified so strongly right now. Many, many ordinary local people's concerns are for the safety and humanity of people seeking refuge in their midst. I want to hear their/our voices amplified too.

...none of which was possible with these working conditions. And I still carry some of the internalized guilt that somehow it's my own fault, that I wasn't 'good enough' to cut it in academia!!

after 9 years of study, (UG+PGT+PhD) was equivalent to less than an NHS band 2. Quantifying it like that helped me make the decision to leave. That, and I wanted to live in the same place, tend my relationships, build a life and home, plan my future...

...my previous/other career. When looking at the t&cs for some of the short term contracts offered to ECRs, worked out the hourly wage, taking into account unpaid prep time, unrealistic marking time etc., not even including own research and time for job applications...

Absolutely this. I stepped off this treadmill after a few years of the zero hours contracts stage, and moved over to professional services. I did my studies and PhD in humanities as a mature student, so was always comparing the career progression experience to that in health services...
