Most happy hanging out with nature and my macro lens. Walking, gardening, amateur botany and entomology. Willow basket weaving, music - not necessarily in that order.

Last week our good friend @trevorthebotanist.bsky.social launched his new book #UrbanPlants so we thought it would be a great theme for #WildflowerHour! Let’s celebrate our wild urban flowers for this week’s challenge! Share your finds this Sunday 8-9pm!

It’s the #ChelseaFlowerShow2025 this week so why don’t we have a #WildFlowerShow for #WildflowerHour? Find wildflowers or combinations of several wildflower species looking absolutely spectacular & share your pics this Sunday 8-9pm! I wonder, if there will be a best-in-show?😉🏆

Out on my local chalk downland nature reserve in the borough of Croydon this week, I was surprised to see this flying up the hillside feeding at birds-foot trefoil. I think it is a Narro-bordered Bee Hawk-moth. Is this an unusual siting for the SE? #moths

I saw this Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) popping up through bluebell leaves in a flowerbed. I see one per year in our garden but never in the same place. #wildflowerhour

Lousewort (Pedicularis sylvatica) popping up through the sandy heathland of the New Forest this week. I read it is common but living in the chalky south east I haven’t seen it before. #wildflowerhour

Germander Speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys) all over the garden, feeding lots of tiny bees. #speedwell #wildflowerhour

I was watching 2 male Big-headed Mining Bees staking out the entrance to their nest. They were pouncing on almost every female leaving or entering the nest. Sometimes they successfully mated but often they were fought off. @ianbeavis.bsky.social #bees

This morning I saw the Big-headed Mining Bees (Andrena beaucephala) emerging from their rodent hole nest and waiting for the sun to warm them enough to fly off. @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social #Bees #Nature #spring

The White Bryony in our garden is growing really well this year. Last year to was getting eaten by the slug plague. I worried that the WB Ladybirds would have nothing to eat, but there are three adults out and about. 😊 @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowers #Ladybirds #Entomology #Nature
