3. Sacred Values:

Radicalism can emerge from individuals' commitment to the values at stake. People are more willing to engage in extreme behaviors when they believe they are protecting their sacred values (Atran, Ginges, et al.).

2. Separatist Identity:

Group identification with a minority group + a superordinate entity (such as the nation) leads to activism - people believe the superordinate entity can change. But disidentification with the superordinate entity can drive radicalism (Klandermans et al.)

We tested three hypotheses:

1. Social dynamics:

Radicalism emerges from developing encounters with outgroups. Recurrent hostile encounters shape adversarial inter-group identities (Reicher, Drury et al.). Here, we measured previous exposure to police violence.

The court ruling did not alter support for Catalan independence (35% of our sample), but it increased commitment to Catalan independence among supporters.

The number of supporters who held Catalan independence as a sacred value (non-negotiable value) went up from 48% to 55%.
