(and more books)
deeply engrossed in They Were Counted by Miklos Banffy, which I would never have discovered without enthusiastic recommendations here - thank you - from @jacquiwine.bsky.social @nancykay-alt-acct.bsky.social and @neglectedbooks.com
They were right, it’s very readable and wide ranging

Rereading Nancy Mitford's The Blessing, and re-listening to the excellent vintage Backlisted podcast edition with Mitford biographer Laura Thompson, which discusses the book:
Fond of this episode as it's the first one I ever heard, back in the day 😊

Yes! daft threads of "I'll be going dressed as..." jokes, some great pumpkin pictures, a busy #Samhain hashtag, and positive things to do like the book people. Samhain greetings to you both, Valarie x

Same Hogweed still going for this week's #WildflowerHour - three umbels of flowers waving in the wet windy field, as Autumn Colour begins in the distant woods:

Weaver of Dreams by Elfrida Vipont - the childhood of Charlotte Brontë and her siblings. Written as a children‘s book, vivid and memorable, and still on my shelves.
Cover - a watercolour by Charlotte…

#WildflowerHour one last hogweed, standing not very tall, and flowering in the field. There was a late hay cut, and this has come up since then.

For this week’s #WildflowerHour, memories of early summer exploring the Muker Meadows in Upper Swaledale:
my #FavouritePlant has got to be Melancholy Thistle, a first for me, growing by the stream at the Yelland Meadow Nature Reserve:

Wild Angelica - Angelica sylvestris - much less this year than last year, when it enjoyed the wet Springtime; but some plants thriving in damp corners of fields and just setting seed now with some proper Umbel shapes:

#WildflowerHour #SeedHeads Wood Sage, Teucrium scorodonia - not just found in woods; near here it grows on the Malvern Hills. The little cup-like seed cases are so distinctive!

That little round thing was going round and round for a long time, as if it was, idk, counting the years or something :)

Finished Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden: an atmospheric story with a dramatic ending! Growing up; issues of loyalty; the cusp between childhood and adolescence; family life and learning about other ways of living. Some enchanting characterisation, not least of the beautiful setting. Glorious!

Please can we ask #WildflowerHour friends for some #WildflowerHourID help? My friend has gone to work in the Channel Islands and the plants are very different from Herefordshire - she sent me this pic of a little pink flower by the sea today:

#BookWormSat Revisiting Rumer Godden’s The Greengage summer. Such a joy to go back to a book last read decades ago. It’s such a visual book: here the countryside is described as an artist sees it painting a picture:
