Archer also successfully campaigned for a minimum wage of 32 shillings a week for council workers in Battersea. He was a multi-talented man having worked as a professional singer, studied medicine and ran a photographic studio.

He was a radical Liberal who later became a member of the Labour Party and relentlessly campaigned for racial equality. He fought off racist accusations by opponents that he was not British born, despite being born and raised in Liverpool (sounds familiar with today’s politics eh?!).
