Fabulous time Dancing in the Old in Lewes this weekend, from the hop-festooned church service celebrating Harvey’s Brewery, to drinking up the last of the old ale in the yard, served by members of various bonfire societies, while dancers entertained us.

Lewes does folklore pretty darn well.

They felled the diseased elm on my street and passers-by were using the hollow stump as a rubbish bin. My neighbours filled it with their garden compost to plant flowers but some squash and potato plants had other ideas. There is now talk of street soup. The elm is still trying to grow.

So looking forward to reading this. My favourite birds in folk songs are blackbirds - in folklore, they are supposed to be a symbol of rebirth and reinvention. When I heard that, I realised perhaps Paul McCartney knew that too when he wrote ‘Blackbird’ for the Beatles. It’s a nice thought.

First time at Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green yesterday. A beautiful face-punch of all things folk, just wonderful.
