Perfect for my commute to the office tomorrow!

It was in ‘Smart Schools’ by David Perkins and was about fragile knowledge not being about knowledge that’s missing, but that’s not transferable. We wrote a little bit about it in Symbiosis which I’ve dug out in the images but the level of detail he offers is really interesting.

A bit of Steplab news I promised to post here as well as (& before) the other place…

I'm delighted to share Steplab has been working with the wonderful team at Teach Like a Champion to add their brilliant resources to our platform for any schools that choose to add it!

This is good so far. Unsurprisingly, lots of nerdy wordplay which I am loving.

One being - if you feel ‘elfshot’ it’s when you’re around someone that makes snipey comments that aren’t explicit but feel like the wounds inflicted by elves (I think the tiny kind not LOTR kind)

I think the Doggystyle album came out the year after and was the soundtrack to a misspent summer

Repost with the first album that you bought with your own money.

As it’s Rosé season, worth recommending this Vinho Verde if anyone’s partial to a slightly effervescent Rosé. Under £10 too!

If anyone’s up a for a little Bluesky wine club, I might make a list.

@emcteach.bsky.social I’m sharing these with some caveats but here’s a doc of Qs I used to support SLT to work with subject leads on curriculum - within or outside of their specialism.

I imagine there are bits I would no longer use but it’s mostly sound - barring the strange acronyms. #UKEd #EduSky

I’ve written a few pieces in Symbiosis & for Mary Myatt & John Tomsett’s book. I’m not sure what I can share publicly from the latter but I’ve attached a little extract from Sym.

I also have some very old LM framework docs with agenda items & Qs - I’ll see if I can dig them out.

A lovely little reminder.

But it’s easy to forget to be intentional in this way. A while ago, I put together Qs for new line managers that might help them to guide someone through their ideas - not hugely school specific. It’s partly based on coaching training I’d completed.

They’re very basic but have added them here:

Just as importantly, training included possible pitfalls and how to pre-empt them. We don’t want any lethal mutations so we have to think really carefully about how to avoid them and share this with teachers and TAs.

Whilst TPS is a super simple strategy, we do not leave any of our implementation to chance. We don’t just talk about ‘what’ this strategy is, we look really closely at ‘why’, ‘how’ and importantly, what can go wrong! Training included questions for teachers to ask when planning:

Then we brought in some contextual rehearsal. If we want teachers to try things out in lessons we need to make sure they’re super confident in doing so. Deliberate practice with really clear examples is a brilliant way to do this. These are some slides we looked at in teams.

We also made some similar cheat sheets for teachers and TAs - particularly for less experienced teachers who may not yet have some of these strategies in their toolkit. We use micro-scripting a lot so we often include some common language for new teaching approaches.
August 6, 2024 at 10:18 PM
Our training included our pastoral teams who could also use some of these strategies to support pupils to articulate themselves outside of lessons. We then made some resources for pupils’ planners based on some excellent ideas we saw on Twitter for what these might look like.
August 6, 2024 at 10:17 PM
We started by outlining the good, the bad and the ugly to create a clear model for what this might look like in the classroom. Good CPD should always clearly define what effective strategies look like and what can go wrong.

So my brilliant team of Lead Practitioners and teachers keen to develop strategies, worked on some CPD for teachers to promote ways of embedding more opportunities for oracy in the classroom. As all strategies in schools should, we started with ‘Why?’
August 6, 2024 at 10:15 PM
In ‘Symbiosis’, Kat and I were keen to outline the link between oracy and the enacted curriculum; to articulate, understand and contemplate the subject, we must be able to speak it. Promoting high quality talk is at the heart of explicit teaching.
