The scholarship about bias in teaching evaluations is absolutely vast. A colleague and I built an annotated bibliography of the literature, all of it indicating that student evals are horribly biased. Why we still use them for tenure and promotion beats me.

I’m teaching political science to mostly conservative (mostly male) students, so in the current political environment any nice comment in a student eval is absolute gold.
