Oh, I forgot to mention that I end up paying a smaller percentage of my paycheck for taxes here than I did in Los Angeles. The jobs here don't pay as well & cost of living is admittedly high, but quality of life & less day-to-day anxiety definitely makes it all worth it for us.

We'll walk out of here after receiving prompt, top notch medical care probably without spending more than $5 for each drug they prescribe. As imperfect as our healthcare system is here, most of the time it does what we need & doesn't normally cost more than a copay. 4/?

While I was writing the next bit, the doctor came in & listened to his breathing to figure out the dosage of the steroid that they want to give him. The point of all this is to illustrate how everything you've been told about single payer healthcare is a lie. 3/?

She warned us when she dropped us off that it might be a while before a doctor can come see us. There are clearly tons of kids here tonight, but another nurse just came & checked him & said she'll be back in a few with a steroid to help his breathing. 2/?

For me it was right before the election when my friend told me his 10 year old nephew was super into Trump. And this was in Los Angeles. I didn't even know what to say. Like how TF were they raising this kid?

Word, butm TBC it wasn't him I needed to get away from. It was the tens of millions of people who showed us who they really are.

That's where I was right after they voted him in back in 2016. And we did leave. We're very happy now in Aotearoa / New Zealand - though we're definitely scared for all our friends & family back in the US.
