Research Development Workshop Gender and Politics in MENA Deadline for Application: September 20, 2025 The Arab Political Science Network (APSN) announces a Call for Applications for the annual Research Development Workshop. This year the workshop is designed over 5 months to maximize engagement, mentorship, discussions, and feedback with the selected participants. This opportunity is aimed at both PhD and advanced MA students in / from an Arab country. The deadline to apply is 20 September 2025. The research mentorship program will support participants to build research capacity and foster a transnational scholarly community among graduate students from the region. The overarching theme of the workshop is Gender and Politics in the MENA region.

ABSTRACT IZA DP No. 18001 JULY 2025 Can Better Information Reduce College Gender Gaps? The Impact of Relative Grade Signals on Academic Outcomes for Students in Introductory Economics* This paper considers the impacts of grades and information on gender gaps in college major and college dropout rates at a large public flagship university. Observational and experimental results suggest women are more responsive to introductory economics grades when deciding whether to major in economics while men are more responsive to introductory economics grades when deciding whether to drop out of college. Providing better information about grade distributions appears to only somewhat mitigate these impacts. These results suggest better information may blunt the impact of relative grade sensitivities on college gender gaps but may not fully outweigh the saliency of grades. Finally, we consider the extent to which aligning economics grading standards with those of competing disciplines would reduce the gender gap in economics graduates but find relatively limited impacts.

Just came across this super interesting working paper "Escaping Patriarchy: Familial Insularity and Gender Attitudes in Oman" by Mohammed Al-Shafaee, Erica Field, Seema Jayachandran @seema.bsky.social, Munir Squires
In many societies, women’s social worlds are largely confined to family networks, limiting their interaction with the broader community. We examine how such social insularity shapes women’s cultural values by studying marriage among kin in Oman, where, like in much of the broader region, more than a third of marriages are between first cousins. Using quasirandom variation in the availability of marriageable male cousins as an instrumental variable, we find that marrying outside one’s extended family leads to significantly more progressive gender attitudes (0.6 SD on our composite index). Remarkably, these attitudinal changes occur even as out-marriage leads to earlier marriage arrangements and less schooling. The shift in gender attitudes appears to operate primarily through dramatic changes in social exposure: outmarriage reduces daily contact with parents and in-laws and decreases the likelihood of living in close proximity to one’s extended family. These findings highlight the substantial role of social insularity in maintaining traditional gender values.

ABSTRACT This research submitted fictitious resumes to online job postings in Egypt, randomizing gender and marital status. More job postings explicitly required men (14 per cent) than women (4 per cent). Despite the gender discrimination in postings, women were only slightly less likely to receive callbacks than men, with only a small difference between single and married women. Differences in callbacks by sex and marital status were not statistically significant. Women and especially married women were, however, particularly likely to be asked for more information rather than scheduled for an interview.
