I disagree that Sir Walter is treated like a cranky, somewhat addled elderly man. He has surrounded himself with enablers including his equally vain eldest daughter, Lady Russell, and Mrs. Clay to feed his endless need for praise.

You might be interested in the blog post of my visit to Chawton where I was privileged to see some of her original letters and a dress she wore. It was amazing. I brought back the watercolor and the pen and ink bottle. It still has the price on the box.

I’d love to hear more about your lecture. You’re a scholar and I’m a devotee who always wants to learn more. She lived a very insecure life as an adult. Too bad her wealthy brother didn’t help them out sooner.

Her life in that era made her into the artist that she was and her stories reflect the values of the time which she cleverly skewers. Such a pity she didn’t live longer so we could have enjoyed more of writings.
