14.69km to finish off Pt Chev (pour one out for the Bird Streets, inexplicably left out of the Safe Speeds Programme despite hundreds of signatures on a petition). Then another 4k or so (not pictured) to get home. Heroic stuff from my battery. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Definitely better speed up to 50 for the last 150m stretch of Walford Road, terminating in a T junction with a cycleway. Flawless logic there. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Leading up to the main gate of Pt Chev School, which has one of the highest 'bike to education' rates in the country. Sorry, kids, better make sure you leave promptly after school, because you're only allowed to be safe here for 15 minutes twice a day. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

One thing you notice in Pt Chev is that lots of the streets west of Pt Chev Rd lead into Selwyn Village, where the internal speed limit is very sensibly 10km/hr. Tell me again why we're encouraging people to drive 50 right up to the gates? #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge #MakeItMakeSense

(There now follows a pause while I eat a scone.) #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Turns out there's a lot of backtracking when half the streets end in a gorgeous water view (like it says on the tin), so 8.67km to tidy up the parts of Waterview I didn't do earlier with @emmamcinnes.bsky.social #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

I really don't think I can see 126m in that photo. If AT leadership are so scrupulous about rules that they 'have no choice' (pls imagine sarcasm font here) about raising speeds, how come it's OK to encourage drivers to break the ones about safe driving? #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Alverston St, incidentally, is a great example of how it's often impossible on residential streets to go 50 legally - the Road User Rule says you have to be able to stop in half the distance you can see in front of you. Stopping distance at 50 is (IIRC) 63m on a good day. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Simeon Brown thinks the second street (Alverston Rd) should have the same speed limit as the first (Great North Road). Chris Bishop might not agree per se, but he's apparently OK letting it happen. (Paging Don McGlashan?) #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Shortly after this I got perilously low on bars and went home, and a few hours after that I realised I'd got a slow puncture somewhere, so watch this space when my bike is back from the mechanic. 2 hours and 21.59km on Strava, and quite a bit of Mt Eden still to go. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

The pool on Bellevue Road we used to walk to from school for swimming lessons. One more for my list of Reasons Variable Speed Limits Suck #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Got a photo of this temporary 30 limit on Grange Road bc I'm actually pretty worried about the anti-cone fervour certain people are whipping up, it has consequences #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Another rad speed calming device for my collection (Ashton Road IIRC). I especially like the bike channel #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Third nostalgia trip of the day around Mt Eden Normal. Plus a special mention of Onslow Road, which doesn't have a 30 limit but could really do with one - I have heard some harrowing tales of near misses when drivers try to get back up to 50 between speed bumps #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

More nostalgia - my job during uni was in this building on Ngaire Ave. Dio is a bit like Mt Albert Primary in that there's a complex mix of school and nearby commercial travel #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

More good stuff from the based Mt Eden Borough Council (I think?) on Mt St John Road. I like the threshold plantings, they set the scene that this is not a street to hoon up, without unduly blocking sightlines. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Off to Epsom, around Dio. I forgot to turn Strava back on until I was halfway up Mt St John Road 😭 #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Here's Windmill Green, where AT suggested putting a bike hub a few years ago. Some of us were keen but it would have disturbed two whole parking spaces, so alas, it could not be #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

This one was a nostalgia trip bc I went to Mt Eden Normal and then ANI (lo these many years ago). Also pictured: Melville Park and the entrance to the former Epsom campus, where one day there will hopefully be a walkable new neighbourhood #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

And that's me for the day. 10 hours since I started, 47.36 km plus what I didn't have Strava on for, two charging and toast breaks, and I'm only about half done. MVPs: my bike battery, zinc sunscreen, Vogels toast. OK performers: my legs. Tired easily: my phone and camera. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

'Walk to School' as a real estate headline. This is right opposite the Maungawhau School gate so the future inhabitants can definitely Walk to School...if they do it exactly when Simeon Brown allows it. Too bad if they want to walk anywhere at any other time of day. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

And a pedestrian shortcut I didn't know about! From Matipo Street to Marsden Ave and Centennial Park #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge

Further evidence that the Mt Eden Borough Council was based. These are on Peary Road and Ellerton Road but they're all through this block. #SafeSpeedsCycleChallenge
