The issue is that it's easier to hide this sort within the ranks of the NG. I would not be surprised if his separation followed a very pointed conversation about how if he choice to stay in? It would only be for as long as it took to force him out.

This is why a field grade officer who got benched and out ahead of an other-than-honorable discharge should be nowhere near a cabinet position. Demeanor and experience matter in equal measure.
