Yeah agree. Chamakh bit exception to the norm as usually players coming to the league take a bit of time to settle rather than start well then tail off. Hope Gyokeres keeps this up / keeps getting better!

Interesting as think I’m right in saying @gunnerblog.bsky.social made a reference to Chamakh in a recent arsecastextra. Maybe that even Chamakh had looked good at times in his first season where hadn’t seen that yet from Gyokeres (but I’m saying this from memory so I might be wrong)?

I hope you made sure someone was filming you first and gave the camera a few sideways glances to check too!

Do you think Arteta actually is prioritising substance over style, or is this is more about the opposition? 1st leg Chelsea attacked & Arsenal won 3-2, could/should have won by more = great game for neutral. 2nd leg Chelsea much more defensive & Arsenal not needing to win respond in kind = “boring”.

It’s because they can’t analyse games so fall back on cliches and results based analysis. Half time was 0-0 so cliches. Full time Arsenal won so results based analysis, i.e. the winning team must have been good cos they won, the losing team must have been bad cos they lost.

Goodly morning!
What did you make of Arteta’s comments pregame about wanting Odegaard to play further forward? I’m sure on here you have discussed him playing deep and said it must be due to instruction, so were you surprised to hear Arteta say that?

Agreed, if the same thing happened with a shot from edge of box or even a cross in open play that would happen. Arguably same is true for 2 of our other own goals this season - 1st goal home to Wolves and 2nd goal home to Brighton.

Turns out bit of time and patience, a good manager who wanted to strip back and reset, and good consistent recruitment decisions was the answer!

Exactly, completely agree. And aside from a takeover by a billionaire who poured money in (which wasn't going to happen and comes with it's own issues) I just couldn't see how we were going to get there!

I’d genuinely begun to wonder what it would take for us to even challenge for the title! City and Liverpool just seemed so far ahead, with others in between us and them seemingly next in line.

Yeah exactly!

Lots of talk about Gyokeres as ever, but I’ve been wondering how deliberate was it to go for a such a different type of striker? Jesus, Havertz and Merino all drop deep and link when at 9. Did we look at any strikers who do that or was the whole idea to go for a different profile?

I’ve seen alot of criticism of our style of play recently but how much do you put that down to the opposition, with deep blocks and making the game stop-start? Does anyone play “good football” in those types of games?

Completely agree. Whenever I look at the other Prem teams I think “yeah he’s a good player, rate him aswell”. Everyone has good players. Like the Forest keeper and 2 CBs, MGW, etc. they had a good team yesterday and you have to work hard to get 3 points.

At least goalkeeper ball in hands is consistent. After 3 seconds ref counts down from 5, so everyone gets 8 seconds.
With this new one the ref would only start counting if thinks there’s timewasting. So you’ll get cases where one team takes ages but no countdown but another gets one straight away.

Hi James, good video. But I did wonder about your point that with a striker Liverpool would have won this. For me a big reason Liverpool were on top in the second half was cos they played a sort of 460 and overran our midfield. With a striker I don’t think they do that. What do you think?
January 9, 2026 at 9:34 AM
Disagree that run was hard to explain.

-Played great 1st half of the season but overperformed - no way we were a 100 point team.

-Underperformed 2nd half of season, small squad & injury to Saliba & Tomi killed us.

-But ended on a points total that was fair reflection of where the team was at.

I’ve actually seen more people (e.g Tom Canton and Charles Watts) say is “load management” rather than flu.
January 3, 2026 at 4:28 PM
Completely agree. Seemed was no ’the guy’ CF so had to decide between various compromises. Young option who might come good. Or more proven option but from weaker league who might step up. Plan always likely to b Havertz most of the time. Think some of the negativity is cos people didn’t clock that.

I think there must have been some very anxious people sitting near the press section yesterday cos Gunnerblog claimed this too. Felt very different in the part of the Emirates I am. Yes some nerves when only a goal up but actually relatively calm and more annoyed about our missed chances.

How hard was it to write this and correctly switch between Deel and Deal?

The 4 youngest players for Arsenal ever - Nwaneri, Dowman, Porter and now Salmon - all by Arteta.

The Chelsea game felt like that, really bitty and stop-start. But apart from some Spurs time wasting before we scored our first it felt like much more of a usual game, so surprised ball in play was so low.
