I knew about molten salt, heat stored in rocks, and a couple of hydraulic options, but this is cool because it looks pretty straightforward to create, easy to explain to others, and might be relatively inexpensive

I did not expect to actually hear the words “this is more of a statement than a question, really” but I did in fact hear them at a panel for WorldCon. And winced. And it was indeed just a statement

I looked at Minneapolis to Seattle once and it was reviewed as frequently delayed and no cheaper than air, unfortunately. The idea of trains travel sounds great but the reality in most of the US doesn’t seem to match up
