Taste in culture is not the same as taste in food. Culture that we experience very directly influences what kind of people we become. Low-brow culture doesn't have to be garbage. High-brow culture does not have to be pretentious, condescending shit.

Claudio Marino, film director extraordinaire, recently told me how much my taste in movies (we have watched a ton of movies together) had influenced his taste, and I took that as a profound acknowledgement and a great compliment.

People often think that comics and movies are similar. They're not. It's only modern comics that mimic movies (to their detriment), because they're not using the entire medium to its full extent. The creators aren't as skilled as they were say 50-70 years ago...

Archie Goodwin wrote Secret Agent X-9 one of the biggest syndicated newspaper strips ever. Simonson is a legend in the business, though I think he was at his best at this point in time.

That he moves so sudden that the other guys stand still. Then the impact of the kick. All in one drawing, intercut into three panels. The last panel is just chaos, things tumbling. The equivalent of an impact shot but without disturbing the flow.
