The proverbial smoking gun here for me is the thing about using two sides of a piece of paper counting as submitting two pieces of paper.

There's actually something a bit funny about Mass Effect here. When you're first rolling up your Shepard in the first game, you get to choose some options about his/her background.

At best, you are making an iteration of a character that was already decided for you in every respect. No matter what strengths and weaknesses you apply, guard rails are in place in the video game space to ensure your success and experience with a story.

But even for me, so fucking what? The difference is, I at least understand I'm working with THEIR character they set me up to play with. The Fallout protagonists are no different than a Cloud Strife, or Chris Redfield, or other fixed named characters in video games.
