Authoritarian Philosophy Nearly every dystopian novel or film features an authoritarian government that restricts human rights, curtails anti-government sentiment, and centralizes its power in a dictatorial manner. In authoritarian philosophy, political power is concentrated in a single charismatic leader who may also exercise control of the media to ensure that only official and approved propaganda is communication to citizens. The state decides what is right for the people—and for itself—and the status quo is typically maintained militarily. You won’t find free and fair elections in authoritarian systems, and opposing the government could cost you your life. It used to be that the U.S. expended vast resources to fight authoritarianism around the world, such as Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, promoting the idea that only constitutional democracies preserve the rights of the individual. Now, far-right politicians are envisioning an authoritarian government in America—a nightmare scenario for lovers of freedom.

Getting his old job back. Russell Vought served as the Deputy Director of The Office Of Management and Budget (OMB) and later as the OMB Director during the Trump Administration. During his tenure, he proposed a federal budget that would cut heating assistance to low income families, nutrition assistance to low income families, and access to Head Start to children from low income families. Vought also supports the Schedule F initiative, which in a second Trump administration would allow the mass firing of skilled and experienced federal employees and replace them with whoever is sufficiently loyal to President Trump. In his section of the Project 2025 Mandate For Leadership memo, Vought expressed his views that independent government agencies are unconstitutional. He is rumored to be in the running for the position of White House Chief Of Staff in a second Trump administration, one of the most powerful roles in Washington.
