Per capita #Laos remains the most heavily bombed country in history. Despite international investment, insufficient data on existing contamination has led to a decline in funding.

However, Laos needs financial support to develop the human resources needed to reduce the impact of #UXO on its people.

Last year, UNDP trialed #UAV sensor systems from 7 different organizations in Ukraine.

Teams used hi-res cameras, thermals, and magnetometry to fine mines, but experts say advancements in sensor fusion are more likely to enhance detection rates than any hardware breakthroughs.

The first mine detector was invented in 1941.

Over 80 years later, we still face a major challenge: reliably detecting and discriminating #landmines and explosive devices in the field.

Detecting objects beneath the surface isn’t hard… distinguishing explosive devices from nearby metal clutter is.

Incidents like this highlight the need for Explosive Ordnance Risk Education #EORE. While accidents often go unreported in rural areas like Tigray, children are frequently the victims of explosive remnants of war. 🇪🇹
