Iberian gauge was chosen so that the line can be built in phases and to allow for mixed intercity serices that use both the new high-speed and the conventional lines (Lisbon-Braga, for instance). And since it doesn't connect with any standard gauge line, it wasn't problematic.

The PPP contract to build it in iberian gauge was signed last week.
