It goes further than that. They are bound, by the UCMJ and sworn oaths, to refuse such orders. They have no choice.

Why?

The military is trained for this. You refuse the order, no matter the consequences. No matter how they may punish you, following that order is forever illegal, and you (in the singular) are accountable.
