The 90th anniversary of the novel by Sinclair Lewis, "It Can't Happen Here" came + went with no fanfare last month. Everyone who at the time dismissed the likelihood of an American dictatorship, of course, are all long dead now.

Crodino, a bittersweet aperitif from Italy. Managed to sip on this for a couple of hours and still didn't quite finish it. A popular way to drink it is mixed with carbonated water, club soda or seltzer water.

This election has shown the 19th & 20th century patterns of assimilation are very much past tense. Gone is the default to a supposed White Anglo-Saxon Protestant norm. Not totally irrelevant, they aren't the end-all be-all model for new waves of immigrants who find common ground amongst themselves.

At least 75 people are known to have been killed by the US military in the Caribbean and the Pacific, on what were purported to be boats smuggling drugs. No judicial charges (much less evidence) have been seen yet in a US court.

One thing for certain: Zohran Mamdani will NOT tear down the east wing of Gracie Mansion.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled doomscrolling to go to a spot on Highway 280 near Gillam, Manitoba.
Looks to be really quiet and peaceful; I'm confident it's way out of cellphone range.

To whom it may concern at the BBC:
If he's coming after you, it's because you did something right.
While his threats are to be taken seriously, it's difficult to take HIM seriously.
I suspect his legion of lawyers are not at all versed in British libel law, anyway.

BBC reporting on the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies to begin soon: the World Wars were mentioned by name, wirh everything else lumped together in 'other conflicts.'
You know, those conflicts by people seeking their independence + autonomy from the British empire.

When booking those holiday trips, remember Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia donated $3 million to defeat Mamdani.
Some of that probably helped a few New Yorkers pay their rent; it didn't do much for Cuomo.

This administration wants to pretend they're doing something about illegal drugs.
They don't give a shit. They make a show of playing video games using real live people.
They've shut down or defunded anti-drug + recovery programs. Intervention programs aimed at specific groups are considered 'woke.'

The teacher who was violently taken by ICE from a daycare center in Chicago was an American citizen.
Even if she did have a warrant for her arrest, how did they think it was okay to burst with guns into a classroom full of children? Have they no limits? Morals? Humanity?

It's convenient for those who criticize 'radical' changes to policing to not see how the entire construct of the why/how/what of police has constantly evolved. The police of 1825 & 1925 show more evolution than the thousand years before; 1950 to 1975 to 2000 to 2025 change has been even more rapid.

Obamacare* was introduced in 2009. As we near the end of 2025, no GOP healthcare plan has been seen.

*originally meant to be disparaging, the GOP must be pissed their trolling nickname for the ACA instead became a popular term, which meant they had to keep hearing Obama Obama Obama.

[Some] people were grousing about Sliwa and Cuomo splitting the vote thus assuring a victory for Mamdani.
Not only did the total number of votes Mamdani received total more than Cuomo + Sliwa together, he got more votes than ALL the other candidates combined.

Ted Cruz went to Princeton + Harvard. Yet he made a rather sophomoric oxymoron inferring Zohran Mamdani was both a communist AND a jihadist. A little bit harder than playing the bass + the piano at the same time.
Odd, how much of the racist crap is coming from other immigrants.
November 5, 2025 at 4:43 PM
All y'all who said you would leave New York City if Mamdani won? Better get on that packing now, because it's gonna be hard to get an Uber tomorrow.

Up for some Lego, Jonathan?

I doubt the president knows this, but Nigeria is larger than Texas. There are sections of the country where the government has little to no control, not for lack of trying. A military action against Boko Haram would require a lot of intelligence + preparation -and the Nigerian government on board.

If you CAN remember the 70s, then you surely remember this. Funny, all these years later, turns out THEY were the ones who didn't like the America in the brochure, and wanted a do-over without the Constitution we've been tinkering with the last 239 years.
They shoulda just left.

What pisses me off (that everyone sees but no one says) is they're annoyed because in their world view, racism, inequality, cheating, injustice + selfishness are the natural order of things. Kindness, respect & caring to them are unnatural to our species + rest of us need to get used to that.

Reading "The Sunflower Boys" by Sam Wachman so tried my hand with Ukrainian borscht, Kasha and deruny. The deli didn't have the beverages mentioned in the book; I'll try to find the rest of the foods mentioned in the book at the other Ukrainian markets in town later.
