I think the name for that is fascism

I used mine today to make heavy cream. Probably my favorite tool in the kitchen. The usefulness to convenience ratio is pretty unparalleled

I accidentally didn't make heavy cream by not blending my unsalted butter with whole milk enough. It all turned out okay anyway

Yeah, I saw that this week. I still don't think that refutes what I said

That's my point. Avatar came out in 2009 but for the undertaking, it was absolutely being made during the W. Bush years. Marvel's Avengers were made after we had full knowledge of what the War in Iraq was

Yes and no. The Incredible Hulk is basically incapable of controlling himself and has an incredible power of destruction. The military has every right to be deployed in that circumstance, and it's only because we know Bruce that we think otherwise

That's why I said his vision wasn't fully formed. I don't think there's any way to say that Ferngully or Dances with Wolves didn't inform his filmmaking, and I don't think he's ever made a claim aside from saying the world design was completely of his imagination

In the first one, he tells them what they're capable of and convinced them to leave the Hometree, which saves them. In battle though, he's effective as a marine but not as a Na'vi, which is ultimately why he needs to be saved. Even with his help, they only win because of the other creatures

I meant his vision wasn't fully formed when he made the drawings in college, not when he made the movie
December 22, 2025 at 11:19 PM
Captain Marvel was actually the first one for which I saw public criticism, and the politics of the prior ones were at least as bad and don't have the excuse of being made during the Bush years
December 22, 2025 at 11:19 PM
Absolutely not. Bringing it back to Avatar, I've seen people say the Na'vi treat Jake Sully as a Messiah. That's not true. I've seen people say the Na'vi wouldn't have defeated the Americans if not for Jake. Also not true. These are specific statements that they got wrong about the film

Cameron was sued early on for stealing Avatar, and he had drawings from college of visuals that were in Avatar. The man is 71 years old. Whether the concept was fully formed or not, his vision precedes Dances with Wolves and Ferngully by probably 2 decades

I also haven't seen anyone level these same criticisms at directors of Marvel movies for the series of outright imperial apologia that was the Avengers series. On top of that, nobody claimed he's Martin Scorcese or that Avatar is in the same league as Killers of the Flower Moon
December 22, 2025 at 11:09 PM
Of course I see the irony. I also see that James Cameron can go to Disney or any other company, tell them he's making a movie, and they're going to give him a billion dollars with no oversight. I'm glad he uses the money to produce a movie that clearly points the finger at U.S. imperialism

It's not people disagreeing that's offensive. What I find offensive is the suggestion that because one person or one group of people finds it offensive, then another person should be prevented from making it out acquiesce to their demands. I care what they think but not if it's "don't make your art"
December 22, 2025 at 11:04 PM
I think it's a perfectly valid reason. I haven't seen people (besides you) leveling general critiques like, "I think the movie was derivative." Instead, they're making specific claims about the movie that conflict with major plot points and then can't offer counter evidence to support their claims

Does increased supply of plant-based protein allow for greater and cheaper supply of plant-based foods? Yes
Is it objectively better for the planet to be consuming more plant-based foods? Yes
At the time he did it, was plant protein production a primary constraint to plant-based food production? Yes

Then don't go see it if you find it offensive. I find your heckler's veto argument offensive. I like the movies, and I think they very clearly point the finger at the U.S. and specifically the military industrial complex as the single greatest genociders on Earth and of the environment
