Whites fled Boston over the desegregation of the Boston Public Schools. Then came the immigrants from El Salvador, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Haiti. So by 2000 minorities were around 53% of the population. But Beacon Hill and the Seaport, what tourists see and TV films is 80% white. Hence the disbelief.
