Oh god, now I look like I’m trying to give oven tips to the great Nigella. I just meant that ovens do vary and perhaps your followers may wish to check on their peppers earlier than I did.

You may want to take a view on whether your oven needs to be at 230C(!) for 25 minutes to roast some strips of pepper. I ended up with charcoal. Not very sunshiny.

I think the reason this isn’t done is that it’s “low quality” heat, i.e low pressure gas (air) at relatively low temperature. Expensive to move it around (need compressors) and too cold to raise steam or heat water for a local heating system.

And the way the dispatchable power agreements are written, if it doesn’t work (high recovery, high availability, efficiency at the level promised in the DPA) then it doesn’t cost the government anything as the up front costs are borne by the private sector.

Have to disagree with you on this one. Boundary Dam in Canada has been running for 10 years.

It is expensive but it is reliable and (relatively) quick to deploy. I think that it’s odd that the gov has chosen to back a new build rather than adding CC to an existing plant.

But this assumes that the gas burned in the new power station is *additional* gas . It’s not, it’s replacing the gas that would have been burned in an unabated power plant. I agree that more renewables is better, but we can’t (largely) decarbonise our grid by 2030 without CCUS.

Not the case in the UK. The grid selects lowest carbon generation 1st. Fossil fuel power stations will only be used when wind/solar/nuclear can’t meet demand. Power stations with CC will then be called on ahead of unabated power stations. It’s not correct to say it will increase fossil fuel use (UK)

Hi Emily, do you not think that carbon capture is a necessary short term (~20 years) solution to reduce carbon emissions while other (better) solutions are matured and deployed?

Being reported that it will reopen at midnight, so there will be redundancy in the system, but with a fire like that it’s going to take time to safely switch over.
