It's a law in Denmark. All drinking units have recycle/pant sign, you must pay the deposit and all places where they sell it they must receive them. Minimum 90% is recycled. So it may not be a new system, but it actually works here.

In Denmark we recycle all drink bottles/cans. We pay a deposit per unit that you get back when you return the empty units. You drop off empty bottles and cans in the vending machine and get the money back. We have had this system since 1922. Sideffect: no bottles in the nature or cities.
