We started the Cres conference with a great talk by Tony Hunter, spanning his work over 5+ decades, from early identification of protein kinases as drivers of cell transformation and cancer to his recent work on PIN1 and cholesterol biosynthesis in bladder cancer pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39808064/

"...with potentially devastating consequences." I'd like to add that these consequences were not just potential. This strategy was pursued in Sweden early on, elevating the death toll way above comparable nations in the region. One of the authors of the GBD was recently elevated to NIH director. 5/5

I gave a talk on COVID vaccines yesterday. I combined in my introduction slide two key meta-analyses, with the good and the bad news about COVID vaccines. While mRNA and some protein vaccines outperform infection in terms of antibody responses and protectivity, this does not last that long. 1/2🧪

The #ECV in BEautiful Croatia has come to an end. My highlight was the acceptance speech of Stipan Jonjić, my PhD mentor and friend, who was awarded the Yearly Award of the European Virology Association. Stipan made tremendous advances to our understanding of NK and T cells in virus control, &...1/2

Many thanks to M. Jakobsen who led the team that identified a robust antigen-presenting function of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC).

pDC have been known for interferon responses to infections. The new study shows that they also support adaptive T cell responses. 🧪

The 34th annual meeting of the @gesvirologie.bsky.social is coming to an end. It was instructive and fun. We learned a lot about #viruses from colleagues across Germany and the world. We look forward to the next meeting, taking place in Heidelberg next March. I'll be there, hope to see you too.

@gesvirologie.bsky.social 2025: The Löffler-Frosch Medal, a symbol of lifetime achievements in the field of virology, has gone to Thomas Mettenleiter from the Friedrich Löffler Institute. Highly deserved!
Thank you Thomas for your decade long comittment to advancing science.

AT the #DZIF 2025 conference, we just had the privilege to listen to STewart Cole from Institute @pasteur.fr talking about Antimicrobial resistance #AMR. This is a massive risk for our society, but the financial incentives are skewed and most pharma has been divesting from antibiotic development.🧪

Traveling home from the #Vaccine Workshop.💉It was another excellent opportunity to learn about recent developments in the field, technologies and concepts overcoming current limitations. We heard a lot about mucosal immune responses, vaccine vector concepts, preclinical and initial clinical trials.🧪

My favorite from yesterday's #Vaccine Workshop in Marburg was the talk by Sabine Walter, who worked as MD in Liberia during the #Ebola epidemic in 2013 and reported on challenges to contain the #epidemic and provide care to infected people, in absence of antiviral treatment options or vaccines. 🧪

Today we start the #Vaccine Workshop of the German Immunological Society (DGFI). Many thanks to Isabelle Bekeredjian-Ding who has been running our section over the past years and who is organizing the upcoming meeting in Marburg. I look forward to discussions with colleagues and old friends.🧪

Inflammation & Immunity conference @helmholtzhzi.bsky.social has been a great success. For two days we have exchanged data, ideas and explored collaborations. I wish to thank our keynote speakers: Dave Masopust, Annette Oxenius, Jan Rehwinkel and Jo Penninger, who set the accents of the meeting. 🧪

I'm traveling to Italy to attend this year's edition of EU Seminars in Virology. I will be sharing our newest data on CMV as vaccine vector in a meeting that actually focuses on viral vectors. Thanks to the organizers for the invitation, I'm looking forward to the discussions. 🧪

The panel that probably spiked the most attention at the Cro-Science meeting in Rijeka has been on #scientific #communication. A panel of scientific journalists detailed the challenges of accurate reporting in an era of increasing bait-clicking and financial pressure on traditional media houses. 🧪

I am attending the Cro-Science meeting in Rijeka. We discuss what needs to be done improve the scientific productivity and competitiveness of Croatian science. A state secretary from the ministry joined us, giving us hope that the ideas may be included in future guidelines and policies. 🧪

Last week I gave a talk about viruses, how small they are, and yet how dangerous they can be, to an audience full of kids.
Incredibly rewarding moments, as the kids listened raptly and asked their questions after my show&tell.
Children give so much meaning to all of our efforts 🙂

What a session!
Each presentation in the morning session at the Mini-Herpesvirus workshop feels like a quantum leap in our understanding of #virus replication, host-cell restriction factors and methods to study them.
Our mechanistic understanding of virus biology is accelerating.

It was my pleasure to speak at the Congress "Science and us" about antiviral immunity and protective effects of vaccines.
Many thanks to Prof. Goran Hauser, the Dean of the Medical Faculty, for the Certificate that makes me officially a visiting professor at my Alma Mater. Wonderful experience. 🙂

I am very excited to host Paul Moss at our institute next week. Paul has made key contributions to our understanding of the effect of chronic infections, like CMV, on homeostasis of the immune system. If you are in the Braunschweig/Hannover area, please join us!
