overall, i enjoyed Ahsoka as a whole for its story, for the characters, but as a piece of film? this show is somehow, the greyest, most boring thing. visually uninteresting aside from costume design and some of the fights but that genuinely it. an “alright” out of ten (19/19)

in other Star Wars projects, the Jedi series of games, the comics, and the novels all ooze with passion for the medium first, and passion for the franchise second. so why is this not the case with medium that started it all? (18/19)

especially as someone who found a passion for filmmaking because of Star Wars. some of my core childhood memories revolve around watching the making of documentaries on my Star Wars discs literally on repeat. what makes it worse is i see the passion for the medium (17/19)

and that’s just part of the problem with Star Wars at the moment. i do not see the creativity. i do not see the passion for filmmaking. i see a passion for Star Wars, but not the craft of the medium that made it what it is. it makes me so sad. (16/19)

The Volume, but maybe that’s a sign that you should rely exclusively on The Volume and i don’t know, actually film on location for some of this? or again, and just spit-balling here, push The Volume to its limits? see what you can do with it? (15/19)

dude, sign me the hell up. but please for the love of god, i’m begging on my hands and knees, MOVE THAT GODDAMN CAMERA. this show is boring to watch. the camera barely moves. it’s honestly insulting as a viewer. i know it comes down to the limitations of (14/19)

part of this goes towards heroes need to win the end (yadayada) but also visually. costumes wise, Night Troopers are perfect, the kintsugi inspired armor is so beautiful, and the hint of what’s under it we got is great, zombified stormtroopers? (13/19)

now, onto the Night Troopers. this show commits the cardinal sin of introducing horror elements into something that didn’t necessarily have it before in that it does not commit. those things should be terrifying, instead they are kinda just cannon fodder. (12/19)

and imo, would make a perfect main character, with Sabine being your second main character. the ambiguous nature of just what Batman’s intentions are makes such a fascinating character, that exploring that through his apprentice’s eyes would just be incredible. (11/19)

honestly, the biggest breaths of fresh air are Baylan Skoll, Shin Hati, and the introduction of the Night Troopers (another can of worms i will get into shortly). I almost wish that this show was not about Ahsoka, but Shin. Shin doesn’t have all the answers, she’s headstrong (10/19)

precedes Rebels with Star Wars: The Clone Wars. the Clone Wars feels wholly different even from the Prequel Trilogy and again is part of why it’s so beloved. Ahsoka just feels like a Disney+ Star Wars show, and unfortunately not much more. (9/19)

to a Star Wars project and risk it not feeling Star Wars enough. but i raise you this; the prequels do not feel like the original trilogy (imo) at all. that’s what makes them so great and what continues to make them fan favourites. this includes the original series that (8/19)

and the overall embracing of the fantasy genre with the entrance into the new galaxy, i loved all of that. however i wish they would embrace all of those things more, the influence and taste was there but not given enough room because they don’t want to make too many changes (7/19)

i do absolutely love them leaning more and more into other genres with this show, the fights and Ahsoka’s main journey reflect samurai film, we see some coming of age elements in Sabine’s story, and very slight political intrigue with Hera (i wish there was more of it) (6/19)

by watching the latest in a frankly niche collection of spinoff shows, but you never know, someone might just do that. (5/19)

this show falls victim to being 1) a continuation of a previous stories, thus making it necessary for it to be aimed toward the “fans” of the previous series and 2) not incredibly accessible for new fans. now the typical new fan isn’t going to start watching Star Wars (4/19)

i do think that Sabine becoming a Jedi does slightly make sense, however it is a strange choice. Ahsoka having an apprentice is a fantastic idea, although, to make the show more accessible it would make more sense for this character to be either wholly new. (3/19)
November 30, 2024 at 2:38 PM
story wise Ahsoka S1 is fantastic IF you’ve seen Rebels, not a bad thing in the slightest, i think everyone who likes Star Wars should give it fair shot, but obviously with this being a live action piece you open yourself up to more people who don’t watch animation at all (2/19)
