Ive found starting to colour in black and white before putting colour over that works well for the look im going for with the arts for this worldbuilding project, hence the greyscale. To complete the look, I then use some filters and such (multiple filtered layers, variable transparency.)

I dont actually have a tablet or stylus or anything, so what I do is I draw physically before scanning that in to colour in and finish digitally. Here is an example of how that looks with the portrait here.
