This might be interesting for some Sinology scholars as well!

Indeed. There was a sharp turn in how politics vs. Sinology as a field understands Chinakompetenzen over the last decade: from ”we want to understand the development there, and why it’s happening“ to utter Sinophobia, no matter what China does.

From the workshop, it would be that we have to rethink how we understand ”Chinakompetenzen“ (China competences) and ”Deutschlandkompetenzen“ (Germany competences). From the overall trip: What an extreme diversity of tea types there is even in an area famous for a single variety. #大紅袍

Indeed! Although I’d say it’s rather the trade route than a street name that’s described by the term.

Still sad I had to drop out of the conference but I‘m thinking of you in Xiamen!

Wait, is it the same tropes that I’ve learned about in my second year BA seminar on ontology? Like, the use of abstract particulars in the context of the problem of universals?

Working on Gongyang Confucianism, which deals a lot with regicide, the chapter "A Quantitative History of Regicide in China" in this volume is super interesting for Chinese Philosophy too. The death risk (through murder) for a ruler being 1000 times that of a commoner is quite a fascinating number!

I hope that this list will help some people to find their own gateway into Gongyang Confucianism, and I'm happy to give further recommendations!

Last but definitely not least, Kang Youwei #康有為 is probably the best-studied of all Gongyang scholars. Out of a massive number of works, I'll include but two: 唐文明's 敷教在寬, which examines Kang's #理學 and #經學, and 宮志翀's very recent 人為天生, studying Kang's #三世說.

Drawing a lot of ideas from Gongyang Confucianism for his studies of the Guliang zhuan #穀梁傳, I would also like to mention Liao Ping #廖平 here. Sometimes considered the last classical Confucian, his thought has been described in detail in 魏綵瑩's 經典秩序的重構.

Concerning Wei Yuan #魏源, Jane Kate Leonard's Wei Yuan and China's Rediscovery of the Maritime World gives a brief introduction to his thought. Recently, however, we've also been graced with a great study on Wei's philosophical thought by Stefan Christ (only in German).

iu's most prominent students have more works dedicated to them: For Gong Zizhen #龔自珍, Judith Anne Whitbeck's dissertation, The Historical Vision of Kung Tzu-Chen (1792-1841) is a good starting point. Other scholars have written books on his poetry for example.

Both Liu Fenglu's student Ling Shu #凌曙 and Ling's student Chen Li #陳立 still await further study in Western or Asian languages. Even though I am still waiting for my copy of it (first one was lost in the mail a while ago), the 凌曙集 contains some promising studies on Ling.

For Zhuang's grandson Liu Fenglu #劉逢祿, we have 曾亦's recent 從素王到真王 and 吳龍川's 劉逢祿《公羊》學研究. Wu's study is decent and although I haven't had time to read the first book yet, Zeng is usually a safe bet. 張廣慶 has also compiled a good biography: 武進劉逢祿年譜. #ChineseThought

Moving to the Qing, we will still have to wait for some in-depth studies for early figures, such as Zhuang Cunyu #莊存與 and his student Kong Guangsen #孔廣森. For them, some good articles exist but no full monographs. #QingDynasty

While not a Gongyang work per se, many Qing Gongyang scholars saw the Baihutong/Bohutong #白虎通 as representative of New Text and Gongyang doctrine. Thus, I want to remind everyone of this great translation by Tjan Tjoe Som 曾珠森! #ChinesePhilosophy

For He Xiu #何休, we have a great biography by 黃朴民 titled 何休評傳 and 郜積意's recent study of He Xiu's philological practices called 義例與用字. Although I won't include primary sources (except for translations), the reconstruction of the #三闕 in the last volume is great!

Starting with the Chunqiu fanlu #春秋繁露 and its presumed author, Dong Zhongshu #董仲舒, several book-length studies by Michael Loewe, Gary Arbuckle, and Sarah Queen exist. Furthermore, Sarah Queen and John Major's full translation is out since 2016.
