That&/ the problem with the gradual backslide. I think the best thing is to give them “goalposts” almost. You say, “when XYZ happens, that’s a sign of things going bad”. They’ll say it’ll never happen, but when it inevitably does, it almost serves as a reality check.

Outbreak was one of the big ones for me. But honestly a ton of my inspiration was YA historical fiction on epidemics!
