On May 8, 1945 – Victory in Europe Day and President Truman's birthday – Truman addressed the nation from the Oval Office to celebrate that, while the war in the Pacific was far from over, "the flags of freedom fly all over Europe." #VEDay80

Today is the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the end of WWII in Europe. Churchill addressed a jubilant crowd from a balcony in Whitehall. He flashed his famous V for victory hand gesture ✌️ and said, "This is your victory. Victory for the cause of freedom in every land." #VEDay80

During WWII, Clementine Churchill launched the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund, rallying support from all walks of life. They raised £8M to provide vital supplies & medical equipment to those suffering from the Nazi invasion of Russia. A remarkable feat during UK wartime shortages.

What did they do before email? Write notes of course! In the right note, Winston Churchill (red ink) asks "How many U-boats are supposed to be out working now?" and Private Secretary Jock Colville (black ink) replies "6...at sea and 2 in the French port of L'Orient"

Two of the oldest #ArchivesHandwriting documents in our collection were signed by James Ley, first Earl of Marlborough, in 1625 and 1627. The title became extinct after four Earls, until John Churchill, Winston Churchill's ancestor, was made Earl (and later Duke) in 1689.

The 9th Duke of Marlborough commissioned Achille Duchêne to design the Water Terraces at Blenheim Palace – the ancestral Churchill home – in the 1920s and declared the result "far superior" to Versailles

Last year, ANCM and Paul Rafferty did some detective work and discovered that this #ArchivesLandscape painting by Winston Churchill, long thought to depict Venice, is actually a view of Miami (see the palm trees and skyscrapers?)

(1/2) Queen Elizabeth II granted Winston Churchill a State Funeral, which took place #OTD January 30, 1965. It was attended by tens of thousands and, via television, broadcast to millions across the globe.

Facing today's challenges & problems, visitors often ask "What would Winston do about _, what would he think about _?" We can't know, of course, but the fact people keep asking is a testament to his leadership, relevance, & importance
