Aspects of plant reproduction are illustrated using two model species: Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The development of the inflorescence meristem and floral meristems leads to the production of floral buds, where sporogenesis and gametogenesis take place. Although micro- and mega-sporogenesis, as well as micro- and mega-gametogenesis, occur concurrently in floral buds of both species, for clarity, the pollen grain development (via microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis) is depicted within the anther of Arabidopsis and mature female gametophyte development (via megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis) is shown within the ovules of the tomato ovary. At anthesis, self-pollination occurs, followed by pollen tube growth towards the female gametophyte for double fertilization, culminating in seed and fruit production. Created in BioRender.
