Immigrants face so many more hurdles and roadblocks than the rest of us do. They have to work twice as hard just to get by.
I suspect that many people are opposed to immigrants because they secretly fear that they are not good enough to compete with them.

Or it could mean just the opposite. Since the Democratic Party is the more progressive/liberal party people are learning to use labels that more accurately reflect their beliefs. The parties may also have become clearer about their core beliefs. "Progressive" & "Regressive" seem more accurate now.

Exactly! Trump's genius is his ability to find and push buttons in people that they aren't even aware of themselves. When located below the waterline of a person's consciousness they are hard to see and deal with rationally. Let's hope they recognize the source of the bad outcomes caused by them.

James is really good at doing just that.
He is also clearly more of a devout Christian than the hypocrites that use God to impress the masses and clobber their opponents. That gives him credibility with a lot of people who would not normally listen to a Democrat.

Exactly! Papers are written to impress other scientists. As much work as it is to write the paper, it can't be much harder to explain it in ordinary language. Richard Feinman once said something to the effect that you really understand something only when you can explain it to a fifth grader.

I think that the tide is turning. Most of the people who voted for Trump are not evil or crazy, and they are just as disgusted with this sort of thing as the rest of us.
When they realize their worst fears are happening, but from the right, not the left, they'll join us.
