I was the same way, and as an adult I’ve struggled to understand what appealed to me as a child.

My best guess is that it felt empowering to not only feel like part of the adult world, but to be mocking the power structures of the adult world.

I do think it’s fun that Taibbi’s lawsuit takes a little detour to throw Weiss under the bus.

It’s possible DLR heard the idea later and retrospectively added it to his book, but it’s also possible that the general idea was a common funny idea that rock bands talked about in the late 70s.

The latter strikes me as plausible - it was partly serious, but with a definite sense of humor.

I think the Kansas story proves that this idea of weird-clause-as-reading-test was in the ether in the 80s. The fact that it’s not particularly effective (because electricians don’t read the catering section) didn’t stop Kansas.

The better version of the urbanist argument is not “most Americans prefer dense neighborhoods” but “if suburban Americans were forced to bear the true cost of low density neighborhoods through property taxes and utility bills, many more would choose dense neighborhoods.”

What I’m saying is that actual inflation seems like a significant explanation for, at best, one US election result in the last 40 years.

It seems foolish to ignore other factors, or to make inflation your primary argument why fascism is bad.

Democrats lost the House in 2022, but it was the least bad result for the party in power in a midterm in 20 years. And they held the Senate, flipping PA and losing no seats.

They clearly exceeded expectations in 2022, and I’m comfortable calling that “pretty good.”
November 8, 2025 at 8:38 PM
But how does that translate to the way people vote?

Biden’s approval rating tanked in the summer of 2021, before inflation became a major issue.

Then the Dems had a pretty good midterm election in November 2022 after inflation became a major issue.

How does inflation tell that story?

One reasonable reading of OP’s post is that “the left” is directional, rather than a group of people.

Thanks for this.

It looks like the article has the wrong picture for the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Protein Shake.

I believe that product is the liquid shake in a carton, but the picture is the 100% whey powder (which is a separate product that was tested)

You’re right, it is great how we can see that median earnings increased as fast or faster than prices compared to a pre-COVID baseline. And during 2024 in particular, median earnings increased significantly faster than prices.

Doves and pigeons are basically the same thing.

That is, the domesticated pigeon (and the feral pigeons we encounter in cities) are descended from a species called a rock dove. There are many species called “doves” or “pigeons,” but there is no scientific distinction between the terms.

Strawberries are botanical fruits, but they are not berries.

The edible flesh is an “accessory fruit” and each seed is an individual achene fruit.

Right, and the administration has gone *beyond* what’s in there.

For example, the USAID item shows 6/6 goals completed: cut budget, rescind climate change policies, etc.

“Eliminate USAID entirely” is not on that list, not even close, and they effectively accomplished that within weeks.

I know it’s not, like, a top priority right now, but I do think we need a constitutional amendment banning athletes with good politics from playing in Boston. It’s just not natural.
