Just wrote a short history of John A. Johnson's 1908 presidential candidacy. He was the Democratic governor of Minnesota and lost the nomination to William Jennings Bryan. Link is in the first comment.

This photo shows a special step called a "kite winder" that is found in Dutch and Swedish houses in the mid-Atlantic states. English houses didn't use kite winders in their boxed winder stairs until the mid-1800s.
