So I'm thinking either Jo Malone's 'English Pear and Freesia' or 'Wood Sage and Sea Salt.' Two certified classics that are highly regarded. I think the wood sage one is the "cooler" of the two. The seaweed note coulda been weird though. I then continued to explore other options.

After boring L to death with fragrance knowledge, she settled on looking for fragrances with potential wood, "fresh" notes, and maybe notes of apple or pear.

Ok, so Jo Malone fragrances. They're usually classy, light on the nose, and fresh. I also like that they're not eternally lasting on the skin. Some people (I imagine that L is one of them) would hate if they showered and their fragrance couldn't be scrubbed off the skin. No sensory overload for her

Essentially, a warmer fragrance may consist of resins, spices, sweeter gourmands (sweets/pastries), vanilla, amber, etc. A fresher fragrance may have aquatic notes, green notes (herbs, plants), lighter woods, citrus, etc. They feel a bit less heavy on the nose, as they tend to evaporate quicker.

I'm immediately thinking of Jo Malone fragrances. They're light, theyre not too heavy, they're classy. I did ask her if she prefers "fresh" or if she prefers "warm" and she was like "[Chromatose], what the fuck does that mean?" and I responded, "That's a fair question."

So essentially, L is a very friendly, earnest, and funny friend. She exudes warmth and passion. However, she wants to sort of add to her vibe with an air of sophistication, coolness, suaveness, androgyny. I mean hell yeah who doesn't amirite. But she would love to have that 'cool girl' feeling.

The perfume story paints a picture of a woman who chooses herself over and over again. On the website, the blurb suggests that she indulges in a luxury hotel room alone with her mind, allowing herself to enjoy a dimly lit, fragrant bath. I was like "this is fucking bars honestly" and saved the page

And that's when I stumbled upon "Room Service." which shares a violet and purple fruit note from the brief but no others. A base of amber, sandalwood, and musk. Notes of mandarin and orchid appear- notes I hadn't considered for her. In hindsight, orchids are some of the most elegant flowers.

So the search continued. After trying and failing to find things that fit J's vibe, I happened upon a fragrance for friend L on Vilhelm's site (which we will get to later.) But I perused the website for any dark "fruitchoulis" for J.
At this point, I started wanting to match vibes more than notes.

HOWEVER, this seems to be a divisive one. Some people love it, some people seem to find it horrendous. So I put a pin in that one. I see vanilla listed as a note which can sometimes make or break stuff imo. Vanilla can act like a nice base or someone pouring cereal milk all over your fuckin perfume

Byredo's "Bibliotheque" came to mind simply because of the name, and not having smelled this before, I was surprised to learn that it actually shares a lot of notes with Black Tulip. (Dark fruit, violet, patchouli) it has some interesting notes like leather which invokes book cover.

So in terms of vibes, J matches her current fave perfume. Sophisticated, smart, an air of mystery, careful with crafting a good appearance. I know that J loves fantasy and romance as well, so maybe a fantastical or bookish element. Some perfumes have ink or paper notes too.
