I bought this signed copy of Grasset's book on the Battle of the Marne, 1914. It's dedicated to a general whose name has been cut out (top right of the photo). Possibly, a general who fell into disgrace in WW2. Perhaps Weygand? Open to ideas on this. Can't be Petain, who was a marshal in 1934.

I haven't found many French FWW regimental histories, but this one is really good. The firsthand accounts of the arrival of 1CA at Guise with flags unfurled, and bands playing were a throw back to the Napoleonic era, but the effect on morale was electric after days of retreating.

Next book up on the Battle of Guise is by General Roquerol, commander of 3CA artillery. Focuses on the problems of command and control in the war of movement in 1914 and the handling of corps and divisional artillery. Interesting but not groundbreaking.

Current reading on the much neglected Retreat to the Marne, August 1914. Shows the narrowing of the gap in performance between the German and French armies at the Battle of Guise and that the German Guard was not as elite as people thought. Too focused on recreating the victory of St Privat, 1870!
