From the campaign trail Catching up with Chris Murphy in New Hampshire. He spoke at a town hall at St. Anselm College last night and NOTUS’ Kate Nocera was there. On running for president: “You know, I’ll be honest with you. I am not, in this sense: What a fool any of us would be planning to run in an election that may not happen.” On the call for Chuck Schumer to step down: Murphy called it more of a family conversation “between the 47 of them” than anything else. “We have to be more united...that's a question for the caucus and a question for our leadership as well." One quote that summed the evening up: “I had a colleague tell me I was being too alarmist. I don’t think the problem isn’t that we aren’t too alarmist, we’re not alarmist enough.”

I'm told there is significant friction within different wings of DHS and the administration, with Border Czar Tom Homan & ICE Director Todd Lyons preferring to prioritize targeting criminal aliens & the "worst of the worst" or those with deportation orders, while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, Corey Lewandowski, and BP Commander Bovino prefer to use aggressive tactics to arrest anyone in the US illegally, including but not limited to criminals, to ramp up deportation numbers and achieve President Trump's promises of mass deportations.

The arrival of Sora, along with similar A.I.-powered video generators released by Meta and Google this year, has major implications. The tech could represent the end of visual fact — the idea that video could serve as an objective record of reality — as we know it. Society as a whole will have to treat videos with as much skepticism as people already do words.

Working-class New Yorkers are leaving New York City at significantly higher rates than wealthy residents. According to research by the Fiscal Policy Institute, affordability concerns — especially housing and the cost of raising a family — are major drivers of population loss in New York state. The report notes that 90 percent of this loss comes from New York City, with Black and Hispanic residents, households with young children, and low- to middle-income families most likely to leave. In contrast, wealthy New Yorkers have left the state at much lower rates, with the exception of a temporary surge in their migration rates in 2020 and 2021 that was likely induced by the Covid-19 pandemic. In typical years, the average New Yorker has been four times more likely to leave the state than the top 1 percent of earners.

The Germans were also worried, not just in Bromberg but across Poland, that they might be shot at by partisans - combatants dressed in civilian clothes. This was a heightened concern after the regular PolishArmy had been defeated and resistance elements took over the fight. Just like snipers, these partisans were loathed. It was considered a dishonourable, cowardly way of fighting. The 'partisan threat' had a powerful psychological element to it. How could you trust anyone you met in Poland, if civilians might be prepared to fire at you? Much better, many of the German invaders felt, to shoot first and worry about whether the person you feared was a genuine partisan afterwards.
