I taught a course, Rhetoric and Popular Culture, for over 20 years, mostly focused on exactly these themes. I’ve been out of the classroom a while, but this makes me want to jump back into the conversation—about the relationship between commerce and counter-cultures.
A lot has changed. Much hasn’t.

“We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.“

Me too. My grandmother always treated us to a trip to the bookstore when I was a kid. She was a fan of non-fiction, political stuff—biographies about journalists, presidents, etc.
But she *never* judged my choices, happily buying me whatever I was into at the time. She just wanted me to read!

Washingtonian here. Our nat’l forests are precious. I’m always sad seeing the cut trees stacked high on one side of the mill and the finished timber on the other, their bark stripped clean.
Musk’s chainsaw was a prop. This proposal to fell HALF our forests is all too real.
Devastating.
